alaska cruise.

As you know, I go to Alaska a lot. I’d say I’ve spent a decent amount of time in Alaska. So when Derek told me he wanted to go on an Alaska cruise, I was a tad hesitant. I spend so much time in Alaska, and I just wasn’t sure it would feel like a vacation. BUT, I rarely go to southeast Alaska (I spend most of my time in the interior) and have never cruised Alaska. So, I agreed.

It was AMAZING and it far exceeded my expectations. Honest Abe. Calling all Seattleites, if you’re looking for a scenic, beautiful, relaxing, easy vacation, you really should consider a roundtrip Seattle Alaska cruise. No joke, at 11am we were in our house, and by 1pm we were admiring Seattle from our stateroom balcony. It’s unlike any cruise I’ve ever done before – VERY DIFFERENT from a warm weather cruise. In fact, Derek said it was his favorite cruise ever (and he’s been on 5 or 6 cruises). I won’t bore you with all the details but I do have a few tips:

1) I know it’s impossible to predict, but PRAY for nice weather! It makes a big difference in the amount of scenery you’ll see from the ship.

2) For a scenic cruising destination like Alaska, you really need to buck up for the balcony room. You won’t be sorry. Every morning we’d order room service coffee and pastries and sit out on our balcony and enjoy the views. It was amazing. We must have seen 30 whales from our balcony and glaciers galore! Trust me on this one.

3) If possible, choose an itinerary that includes Glacier Bay National Park. There is limited entry into Glacier Bay so not everybody gets to go there.

4) Choose excursions that you couldn’t/wouldn’t do normally. For example, we did a helicopter glacier landing in Skagway and it was one of the coolest things I’ve EVER done. In another port, we went fishing. It was fun, but I’ve been salmon fishing before. For someone else, salmon fishing may be super exotic and a once in a lifetime opportunity. Choose something amazing and spend your money there.

5) Eat in the dining rooms. The buffet is ok, but the dining room is MUCH better. Also, spend the extra money and experience a couple of the specialty restaurants. Yes, I know that you don’t have to, but in my opinion it’s worth it.

she’s a beaut!

I was up in Alaska again last week – here are a few photos from my trip.

This is the Matanuska Glacier. The largest vehicle accessible glacier in Alaska.

This is me and my boss doing a little dog mushing at the Iditarod Headquarters in Wasilla.

Here I am fishing. No fish yet…but I’m having fun!

YES!! I caught my first King Salmon – isn’t she a beaut? I caught her on the Talkeetna River and she’ll be delivered to my doorstop tomorrow. She put up a good fight, but she was no match for me. 🙂 Yummers!

geez…

…it’s been a long time since I posted last. It’s been pretty busy around here with the wedding getting so close. Only 59 days until I become a wife – weird! The invitations went out this morning, and that’s a big relief. They went out a week or two later than I would have liked, oh well, such is life. I’m feeling a little manic about the whole wedding thing. One minute I feel like everything is totally under control, and the next minute I’m clenching my teeth because I have so much to do and not enough time.

In other news, I traveled to Alaska last week. It was good trip! I’m headed up again next week and then probably won’t go up again until September.

We are still trying to figure out what to do about our honeymoon. I’m hoping we get something booked this week, I’m kind of tired of thinking about it.

Tomorrow I have a dentist appointment. Ew. And we all know how much I love the dentist. Last time I was there, they gave me a referral to an oral surgeon because I need to start thinking about doing something with all these baby teeth. I promptly threw the referral in the trash. I just do not have the money to even think about this right now. Although I’m scared because I’ve had a tooth ache for 2 weeks. I really hope it’s nothing serious.

This weekend we went to Emerald Downs to celebrate Ale’s bday – we sure had a great time! I highly recommend it on a sunny day!

updates and observations.

Wow – I can’t believe how long it’s been since I posted. Here we go…

  • Since I last posted I’ve traveled to Scottsdale, AZ and Anchorage, AK. Let’s start with Scottsdale. Every year big mama, Stan and I head to Scottsdale for some much needed quality time, girl-talk and sun. I lived with these two amazing women for many, many years and I miss our love triangle (no – we aren’t incestuous lesbians you sickos). The beauty of the trip is that we’ve been to Scottsdale so many times now that the only must-see attraction is the pool and a restaurant called Cowboy Ciao.  As always, we had a wonderful time sun bathing, shopping, eating, and talking about stuff that only we care about. LOVE IT!
  • Earlier this week I was in Anchorage for work/meetings. Really nothing exciting to report here except that I had the worst pedicure of my life and actually made the lady stop before she finished. She was freakin me out – big time.
  • Derek and I tried a new sushi joint in Madison Park last night – Nishino. Delish!
  • I don’t understand the phrase “I’m never going to get that time back”. When have you EVER gotten ANY time back?
  • Just finished reading two books: Under the Banner of Heaven and Little Bee. Neither was very good – I don’t recommend them.
  • We had a serious scare with my grandpa over the weekend that involved loss of speech and leg movement. We were EXTREMELY upset and nervous, but he seems to be doing much better. He’s home from the hospital. <<Insert huge sigh of relief here>> JD, if you are reading – we love you!
  • Tonight I worked really late. When I got home and stepped out of my car, I thought to myself “Yum, someone is having a good dinner”. It smelled so good. And then I walked into my apartment and realized that person was ME! Thanks Derek.

Well, I think that about does it. Time for bed.

“work”

Here are a few photos from my recent trip to Alaska. We traveled from the Kenai Peninsula to the tip top of Alaska – Deadhorse. And I touched the Arctic Ocean. It was incredible – I’m so lucky to call this work!

busy summer

Lately, it feels like every time I post, I’m apologizing for not posting often enough. Like I previously mentioned, our summers are jam packed with fun! It is a little disappointing to me that I haven’t made more time for blogging, because I really do enjoy it. I will try harder.

Last week I took my first business trip at my new job – we went to Alaska. It was very beautiful and I’m so grateful for a job that allows me the opportunity to travel to such spectacular places. My weekend included: picking up Derek’s new truck (she’s a beaut!); rehearsal dinner for Stacy and Andre’s wedding; Stacy and Andre’s wedding; and a Sunday spent in Magnolia Park BBQing and playing Bocce Ball.

While in Alaska, I flew in a tiny little plane into the deepest part of Denali National Park…Kantishna. It was breathtaking – below are a few photos.
