tired of Oprah

I know I’m going to get a lot of hate mail for this, but it must be said.  I am so tired of Oprah.  Isn’t everyone Oprahed-out yet? She’s on TV, satellite radio, movies, magazines, books…the list goes on and on. Everywhere you turn, there she is. Today, I heard she will be getting her own TV network called OWN.  Perfect; just what we need.

My biggest problem with Oprah is that she gives advice on topics in which she has no experience or authority.  She frequently preaches about marriage and relationships, but has never been married. In fact, she’s been in and out of a relationship with an alleged unfaithful womanizer for years.  She often lectures about parenting and “America’s youth”, yet she has no children of her own.  No relevant experience. She gives advice on weight loss but has struggled with her own weight for years.

On her show, she pretends to be level-headed and down to earth.  Ha – she is an imposter! This is a woman who takes her private jet from Chicago to California to get her eyebrows waxed. A woman who has fried chicken flown in from Seattle to Chicago.  A woman with a solid gold toilet.  A woman who hosts a “Legends Ball” and mandates that guests wear black or white, while she shows up in red.  She has lost touch with reality and can’t relate to the average person.

The worst part is that Oprah has started a cult. Her fans follow her blindly. If she says she likes Spanx, stores immediately sell out. When she recommends a book, it becomes a bestseller.  She starts having Dr. Phil on her show, and now that idiot is famous. I honestly believe that if she announced she started snorting pancake mix, her fans would quickly follow and pancake mix would become impossible to find.

I’m not belittling her success; she has worked hard and has done well for herself.  Do I respect her as a business woman? Yes. Am I impressed that she has built an empire out of nothing? Yes. Do I admire her ranking as one of the richest women in the world? Yes.  Am I tired of hearing about her? YES.

Amen sister!! I’m so glad someone has finally said it!
PS… Did you hear that Dr. Phil is in big trouble for going to visit Britney? Not because it was a sick thing to do, but because he’s denied that he went with the purpose of putting it on the show, which implies that he went with the purpose of treating her and he doesn’t have a license to practice therapy. Uh oh!

And the list goes on! You hit some great key points though. I’ve met a Harpo producer that works close with Oprah and says the woman’s a raging b*tch behind the set. I didn’t find this to be surprising. There are other things that I would like to say, but don’t want to get too personal with her fans. Let’s just say there are many reasons not to be an Oprah fan…

The bigger question is why she’s able to persuade so many middle age, middle class, mostly women? They say that nature abhors a vacuum and there is indeed a vacuum of leadership, counsel and voice that speaks to this demographic. It’s a lot easier to have a “fantasy friend” on TV or in a magazine than it is to deal with making and maintaining real friendships with fallible people. Her shelf life is far longer than I think most of us would have expected.

By the way Kindra, you forgot to list XM radio -They now gave her a channel “Oprah & Friends, Friends and Oprah.” I chose XM over Sirius because of Howard Stern, now I’m really screwed!

Please understand that Oprah had challenges during her life and career… Please do tell your occupation. You have too much time on your hands, otherwise you would spend that energy researching or doing something positive. I believe Oprah is a very postive individual. Please take your negative energy and turn it into something positive. Rally for Obama……

I do agree with you that she lacks experience on things but how come so many people love her advice and it seems to work?

My two cents – People without kids should not give parenting advice for the masses to assimilate. No. No. No.

I am right there with you. I am so tired of Oprah. It’s so fitting that her network will be called OWN. That woman thinks she owns the world.

Okay… that woman ruins my life at work at least once a year. Since I work retail, especially cosmetics, I have to deal with the aftermath of her “favorite things” shows. Everything sells out immediately, and the next thing I know my store is full of cranky suburbanites who want to know why their “thing” is out of stock. I hate it! Who cares what products she uses? Think for yourself, people.

I used to love Oprah but now she gets on my nerves. Don’t get me wrong, she does a lot of good for people and the community and I think that even people who don’t have children can give advice on raising them because people tend to see things better when they are on the outside looking in. However, she should not give advice on spirituality because she is way off base and obviously has not read the bible in a while. She claims to have such a religious and spiritual upbringing but her views regarding marriage and homosexuality venture far from scripture. It is also distrubing that reasonably intelligent women seem to follow her blindly as if they don’t have a mind of their own. I know she thinks she is doing us all a favor by sharing what she likes or what she thinks is the best but I think we were all doing okay before she arrived. My local bakery appeared on her show a couple of years ago and now the prices are so high, people in the community can’t afford to buy from them anymore. The high prices are great for the owners who now cater to tourist but the people in the community who have been supporting them for years were left in the dust. Thanks Oprah!

I have to agree, Oprah is an annoyance. I too liked her at one time but her reaction to a store in France not being opened after hours for her was over the top and I lost any respect I had for her at that point. None of us everyday people can insist that a store open for us after hours then go public with it when they don’t.
When she decided her face was to be the only one on her magazine told me that she was over the top with her ego.
Please Oprah stop already, you are way over exposed with TV, magazine, radio and the fall from the pedestal will be a painful.

I am so glad to hear that some other former Oprah fans feel this way. I liked her so much for so many years. Now, I feel she supports celebrity worship (herself included), which is something that is also totally getting on my nerves. She has gotten away from what made her famous to begin with–GENUINE empathy for the plight of others. If she could come down off of her cloud/soap box maybe I will start taking her more seriously again. Sorry this sounds so whiny.

I live in Sugar Land Texas and I used to watch Oprah and I became exhausted of her. I have a wife and no children so I have free time to look at shows along with playing pool. I wish there was a new Oprah on my beautiful HD set.

Hallie, no one can help knowing a lot about The Ope. She’s everywhere promoting herself and the media goes right along with it. The only way a person can avoid hearing about Oprah is by being blind and deaf.

I am so tired of her. She’s so needy, always finding some new audience or specialist to give her love. I’m tired of this professional emotional mess.

But she won’t go away until she wants to do it. That’s what billions of dollars does for one.

    SO AM I…
You are on to a new trend here — Now she’s glomming on to Obama, like, she started it all for him. She just seems, like you say, to be way to in to her self, thinking she’s into the best interests of the world.

    Thanks for a great post!

  18. January 21, 2009 at 6:19 pm

I use to love Oprah, but if I have to hear one more story about Obama from her or some of her celebrity guest I am going to cry. I like Obama but enough already = we get it

I use to be a big fan of her show and couldn’t wait until the next show, now I can’t wait to turn it off. She has become a know it all of everything! I still think she is a good person. She does do a lot of nice things for the less fortunate. But
I think her success has went to her head and I don’t watch her show, and I will not be listening to any of her advice. I don’t agree with a lot of the opinions on politics and religion. She had gotten a little too liberal for my taste.

Oh my gosh yes I am so sick of Oprah. I can’t stand the stupid Friday Live shows. Who the freak cares about what Mark, Ali and Gayle have to say.!! They are not experts on anything and I think it’s the dumbest idea Oprah’s had. They are all a bunch of kiss-ups and it makes me sick! Could they kiss O’s butt any less? Good grief. It’s so obvious it’s disgusting. Ok and if her and Gayle talk about Barack Obama and Michelle anymore I’m gonna puke. We know you love them and endorse them. We get that ok. Enough already. Also does Oprah have any values anymore? Her views on marriage and homosexuality make me ill. She is so wrong on many view points and I hate it when the audience claps for it. Gimme a break. Oprah needs a big piece of HUMBLE PIE.

I live in a suburb of Chicago, and I have been SICK of her for YEARS!!!! I was talking to a friend, and Oprah is REALLY annoying when she does this “Let’s get ready to rumble” tone, or when she feels that she has made a “funny” (where is? my applause? I’m funny!!!) Please take yours millions and go away!!!! How about helping people HERE!!!

I think that too many of you have way too much time on your hands. The great thing about television is that there’s a power button or a channel button. Make use of it and stop complaining. Get a hobby- read a book. Whether you like her or dislike her- she isn’t going anywhere. So turn the tv off. lol

What worries me more: the demographics of her audience, her “followers”so to speak. it scares me quite literally these people don’t think, don’t question and vote.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I so appreciate your blog.
I believe Oprah is one of the biggest single factors in the dumbing
down of America. The power she wields scares me to death. I live in a city
that worships her in the main. I mean literally she is a god to so many.
Doesn’t that make you wonder about the lack of moral fiber in this country?
Just a thought. And so glad to find someone out there who is a sick and tired
of the Oprah-tization of America as I am.
